During July and August 2010, I worked publicly as Artist In Residence in two galleries at Bank Street Arts in Sheffield.

The residency produced two wall works - 'After' and 'Gone', along with a written component. Below is an edited version of the proposal text and to the left is an image that accompanied the proposal.

Over about a month I created two wall works, each in a separate gallery at Bank Street Arts, that echo older works. Firstly, 12 of the most popular postcards from the Graves Art Gallery were reproduced, actual size, as line drawings. The source material for these drawings was the postcards themselves, rather then the actual paintings. Consequently the re-making of the images will be subject to a fractured and faulty translation.

Once that was completed I moved into another gallery to recreate - in oils - a curious image from art’s past. In 1911 the Mona Lisa was stolen form the Louvre by an Italian nationalist hoping to return it to what he believed was the painting’s homeland. While it was missing - it turned up two years later - a photograph was taken of the space it had occupied. I turned that absence into a presence by painting the image directly onto the wall.

During the residency Angelina Ayers - Writer In Residence - and I contributed to an accompanying written dialogue that reflected discussions we had while I was working. It touches on some of the themes I hope are present in the work.

There was even some coverage in the local paper, The Sheffield Telegraph. Click here for the article.

Thanks especially to Liz Waring and the staff of the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield for helping me in this endeavour. All the images in the first piece are owned by Sheffield Museums and can be seen in either the Graves Art Gallery or other Sheffield venues when not on loan or in storage.
